Religions and cultures differ, but there are shared values that all the major world religions embrace.

The five members of this panel, representing the Hindu, Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, and Muslim faiths, will explore their shared human and ethical values in lively presentations as well as a question and answer period.

The participants, members of the speakers’ bureau of the Islamic Networks Group (ING), include a physician, computer engineer, Buddhist abbot, theologian, and interfaith community facilitator who have joined together in a common effort to build a more harmonious and peaceful world. They act on their belief that sitting together in honest and respectful conversation is a powerful first step. You are invited to take that step with them! The event is free, and donations to the Interfaith Coalition of Sonoma County are welcome.

PANELISTS:

DR. SULOCHINA LULLA, MD (Hindu):

Dr. Lulla is a physician at Santa Clara Kaiser Permanente. She has attended extended classes in Hindu scriptures at the Vedanta society and the Chinmaya Mission and has been a coordinator of the Gandhi Youth camp, which promotes Gandhian values of peace and nonviolence. She is also a board member of the Silicon Valley Interreligious Council.

ESTHER A. HELLER, Professional Registered Parliamentarian (Jewish):

Ms. Heller has worked as a computer engineer for 15 years. Trained at Equity Institute, she has been active in diversity training and facilitating for 20 years. Ms. Heller is also president of the California State Association of Parliamentarians and a past president of Keddem Congregation (Reconstructionist Jewish).

HENRY MILLSTEIN, PH.D (Christian):

Dr. Millstein holds a PhD in Jewish Studies, with a focus on Jewish-Christian relations, and has taught humanities and history of religion at numerous universities. He worked for 16 years in language and cultural preservation with the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs in Oregon, where he participated in their traditional religious life. His interfaith experience also includes involvement with Jewish and Buddhist communities.

JIANHU SHIFU (Buddhist):

Venerable JianHu is the first overseas abbot of Chung Tai Zen Center of Sunnyvale. He earned a doctorate in Artificial Neural Networks, then renounced the secular life and was ordained at Chung Tai Chan Monastery in Taiwan in 1994. In 2000, he and four other Dharma masters came to northern California and established Buddha Gate Monastery, the first overseas branch of Chung Tai.

AMEENA JANDALI (Muslim):

Ms. Jandali is a founding member of Islamic Networks Group (ING). She co-designs and develops ING’s educational presentations and cultural competency seminars, and has delivered hundreds of presentations on Islam in educational, religious, and community venues. She has appeared on many news outlets speaking on issues relating to American Muslims, and team-teaches a class on Islam at San Francisco City College. She holds degrees in Near Eastern Studies and History.

DR. MOHINDER GULATI (Sikh):

Dr. Gulati a member of the Sikh Temple in Santa Rosa, California. He was born and brought up in India and has lived in the U.S. since 1969. Dr. Gulati holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Petroleum Engineering from Stanford University. He held key positions in geothermal projects at the Geysers (Sonoma County), the Salton Sea, the Philippines and Indonesia until his retirement in 1999. He lives in Oakmont with his wife of 51 years.
